We are very conscious of environmental issues and try to operate Park Neuk Cottage in an environmentally friendly way. In particular:
Good Thermal Insulation: Despite being an old house, there is a high quality of thermal insulation throughout the cottage: 20 cm of loft insulation and double glazing on most windows.
Efficient Boiler: The house is heated by a modern condensing oil-fired boiler. Hot water is available 24/7, but the heating is controlled by a clock which visitors can adjust to suit their own needs. The temperature in each room is controlled by individual thermostatic radiator valves; We invite visitors to adjust these valves to provide the right balance between comfort and environmental care, and to switch off the heating when it is not required.
Wood-burning Open Fire: Burning wood does not add any fossil carbon to the environment and is a fully sustainable resource. We provide logs for the fire, and invite visitors to use this as the main source of heat in the living room.
Low-energy light-bulbs: We are in the process of changing from traditional incandescent to low-wattage light bulbs: as a bulb fails it is replaced with a low-wattage one. Currently this process is about 95% complete.
Environment-friendly Cleaning Fluids: as far as is practical, we use only environment-friendly cleaning fluids. We invite visitors to do the same.
Compost Heap: All garden waste and food waste may be disposed of on the compost heap. This rots down over a couple of years to provide nutritious compost for the garden. We invite all visitors to make use of this.
Recycle Bins: Recycle bins are provided for paper, plastic bottles, glass and metal. These are regularly taken for recycling by the Local Authority. Additional recycling facilities are provided in the car parks of the major supermarkets and at the local authority recycling centre at Stobhill, (4.5 miles).
Bus Service: A frequent bus service, (3-4 times an hour), from the end of the lane, (about 600 m from the cottage), to Edinburgh and to nearby shops means that you do not need to use a car whilst staying at Park Neuk Cottage.
Laundry: We invite visitors to distinguish clearly between used and unused bedlinen and towels when they leave, to avoid unnecessary laundering of clean items.
